“The school’s Healthy Life Club listens to our opinions and takes us into account”, says eleven-year-old Jaqueline who is proud of the initiatives that she and her partners have implemented to achieve a healthy environment in her school. The program Healthy and Active has given a voice and vote to Jaqueline and many other children in the schools where it operates, empowering them when it comes time to making decisions about activities aimed to improve their school environment and, in so doing, encourage healthy lifestyles.

We launched the project in 2014 based on this philosophy, in collaboration with Save the Children, for its implementation in the states of Chiapas, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, in southeastern Mexico. We seek to encourage healthy eating habits, physical activity, and hygiene among children to improve their health through practical and educational activities.

Learning together

The project focuses on good habit workshops such as healthy nutrition, hygiene and physical activity, directly conducted by Save The Children staff for children of school age (6 to 15 years old), as well as training their parents and teachers in the same topics, although the main focus is on the children.

One year after launching the program, we intensified the sessions dedicated to physical activity and healthy eating, as reinforcement of one of the messages that characterizes FEMSA Foundation.

Nutrition beyond the school

One of the most important aspects is that the students themselves propose measures for improvement and then monitor them. They participate in the solutions and become their coauthors, getting more involved in the project and creating a virtuous circle of improvement in their school and therefore at home and in their communities.

“In the Club I learned that it’s good to exercise and eat fruits and vegetables. I liked it a lot… I learned how to eat healthy and to work out at least three times a week during 30 minutes.”
