ABRIMOS ESPACIOS

General Objective:

Strengthen Water Funds as mechanisms for he conservation of watersheds and funding of sustainable water replenishment activities.

The compensation of water consumption entails a broad meaning. It’s about using all our efforts and necessary resources to supply nature the total we’ve used in beverages to contribute to the region’s water security. It also involves work with communities that live up in the watershed to implement actions together and, thus, stimulate their overall development.

Water for the Future (Agua por el Futuro) works on the conservation of priority watersheds of Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama where Coca-Cola FEMSA works. As of today, these actions have resulted in more than 3 million cubic meters of water replenished to nature.

General Objective

Contribute to water security in Latin America and the Caribbean.

WE DESIGN AND PROMOTE FINANCIAL AND GOVERNANCE MECHANISMS AS WELL SOLUTIONS BASED ON NATURAL INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS AND OTHER INNOVATIVE PROJECTS.

Water security is an essential water management concept; it envisions the successful management of the resource in homes and cities in the long run; it boosts its efficient use in agriculture, energy industry; conserve and restore ecosystems and sources; it develops hospitable cities that are prepared to face natural disasters.

“The Latin American Water Funds Partnership has created conditions in order to facilitate work with different actors throughout the Water Funds models. They are so much more than a simple financing tool because they’re effective tools of governance and management.“

SERGIO I. CAMPOS G
LEADER OF THE WATER AND SANITATION DIVISION AT THE INTER-AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK

During 2017, we built a new vision for our water funds and we took pivotal steps in order to achieve water security in the cities where we’re present.

As part of the Monterrey’s Water Fund (FAMM), in Mexico, we established the solution portfolio for the Nuevo Leon 2050 Water Plan. In Guatemala, we kicked off FUNCAGUA’s operations with the strengthening of environmental education capabilities and actions.

In Colombia, we launched the Santa Marta and Ciénaga Water Fund that will benefit more than one million inhabitants. In addition, we make our way through with green infrastructure activities for the conservation of water sources.

COME FOR WATER IN MEXICO AND COLOMBIA

Come for Water – Mexico

After the earthquakes hit the south of Mexico in September, we stopped measuring the distance between communities in kilometers and decided to shorten the distance through a joint effort.

A state of emergency needed an inmediate response to supply safe water to the hindered communities in Oaxaca. Boarding the Ven por Agua with the support of Solistica, we arrived in Oaxaca, Mexico. With the mobile treatment plants on board, we delivered more than 190,111 liters of safe water in Tehuantepec where we were supported by local government and by other organizations to distribute roughly 4,500 demijohns.

We also arrived in Ixtaltepec with Coca-Cola FEMSA and its mobile treatment plant ISUZU. We handed out water in the municipality and also took it to Juchitán with Eólica Sur volunteers; we managed to hand out over 4,900 demijohns.

The best way to reduce impact when facing a natural disaster is to be prepared. With the Mobile Water Treatment Plants, we shorten distances and work with affected communities to help them get back on their feet and move forward.

Come for Water – Columbia

On April 1st, the intense rain provoked the flooding of the Mocoa, Mulato and Sancoyaco rivers. The strength of the currents and mud avalanches that were associated to the flooding and it hindered lots of people.

Water supply is crucial in a situation like this. With Cruz Roja Colombia, we arrived in Mocoa, Putumayo’s capital on board of our mobile treatmnet plant to provide access to residents after the natural disaster hampered the region.

We distributed over 1 million liters of safe water (the equivalent is 56,820 demijohns). Nonetheless, on May 14th we left the hindered zone after weather conditions hampered our mobile treatment plants.

General Objective

Supply safe water to communities that are in a state of emergency due to natural or anthropic disasters in order to for them to have access to basic needs.

When a state of emergency arises, especially due to natural disasters, water supply is a challenge that must be solved immediately. In 2017, we aided in two situations in Mexico and Colombia respectively.

After the earthquake hindered the region in September, we arrived in Oaxaca, Mexico. With the mobile water treatment plants on board, we delivered more than 190,111 liters of safe water in Ixtaltepec, Juchitan and Tehuantepec.

In Colombia, we responded to the flooding of the Mocoa, Mulato and Sancoyaco rivers. For two weeks, we managed to deliver over 1 million liters of safe water.
