Broadening the Scope of Impact

Drinking Water Supply System For Wayúu Communities

The commitment of the residents of the communities has been key to our projects ever since we started working in the region with Water Links (Lazos de Agua).

The economic conditions and the significant distance between Wayúu communities hinder the distribution of water. During 2017 we built a supply system to expand and enhance access to this resource.

FACT SHEET

Location: Maicao, La Guajira, Colombia

Partners: Fundación Aguayuda

Total Investment: USD $113,050.00

FEMSA Foundation’s Investment: USD $100,000.00

Duration: 2017

General Objective

Enhance and amplify the benefits of a sustainable and self-administered safe water supply system (it has been a successful model). Broaden and improve the level of access to safe water and sanitation for a rural and indigenous community. It should be noted that it will be used as a replicable model regarding other zones of the La Guajira Department.

Having access to safe water and covering basic needs was not a simple task for the residents of Wayúu. During 2017, we worked to bring this resources to their homes.

The lack of water was not only due to economic conditions of the region where 83% of the population lives below the poverty line. The geographic conditions act as obstacles because communities like Kasichi or La Parcela are far away from each other therefore hamper the construction of the distribution network.

“It’s important and dignifying to have access to water because it improves the children’s and our community’s quality of life. I’m so pleased to have been benefited by this project, I feel happy“.

Josefa Girnú
Shamima’ana Community

With Fundación Aguayuda, we built a universal model that will enable 525 people to have access to safe water. It will diminish time in terms of its quest and its collection. The high level of participation of the communities was an essential element because the ownership of the project will guarantee its own sustainability.

This is not the first time we work in the region. Between 2013 and 2015, we impacted the communities La Parcela and Wayumana’ana due to the drilling of a well during the first phase of Water Links (Lazos de Agua).

Infrastructure for Growth

Green technologies in the Valley of Mexico

In the Valle de Bravo-Amanalco watershed, more than three thousand families, Teresa Estrada’s family for instance, lack access to water and sanitation.

In 2017, we worked with the communities to build and teach them how to keep green technologies running. For instance, rainwater harvesting and dry toilets that permit access to water and to manage waste properly.

FACT SHEET

Location: Villa Victoria and Amanalco, State of Mexico

Partners: Procuenca Valle de Bravo

Total Investment: USD $89,698.89

FEMSA Foundation’s Investment: USD $83,449.55

Duration: April 2017 – April 2018

General Objective

Promote the provision of water and sanitation in the Amanalco – Valle de Bravo region and achieve the improvement of the quality of life of its residents as well as the sustainable management of the Amanalco-Valle de Bravo Watershed. This must be carried out in order to improve the quality of its water resources, biotic and the environmental services that it provides.

The Valle de Bravo-Amanalco watershed supplies over 2 million people in the metropolitan zone of Mexico City everday. Nonetheless, in cuenca arriba where Teresa Estrada and more than three thousand families live lack access to this resource.

Walking long hours to collect water is a common task for Teresa and her neighbors. Additionally, having access to sanitation and hygiene seemed impossible due to geographic conditions.

“Thanks to this benefit I’ve changed my routine because I don’t have to collect water to carry out my chores“.

Teresa Estrada, Mesa Rica

Since 2008, we’ve worked to improve the quality of water in the region with the installment of green technologies. In 2017, we installed rain harvest to store water for months of drought. Moreover, we built bathrooms to avoid open defecation (it’s a factor that plays a key role in the pollution of water sources).

When the inhabitants of the community (like Teresa) get involved, they not only develop new capacities to keep the infrastructure working, but they feel empowered and compelled to apply them in other aspects and take charge of their development.

CONNECTING A NEW FUTURE

Water Links (Lazos de Agua)

Even though we’re far apart geographically, the residents of 269 communities in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia and Paraguay are bound by the same reality: they’re part of 36 million people that lack access to safe water in Latin America.

FACT SHEET

Location: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia and Paraguay.

Partners: One Drop, Inter-American Development Bank (BID) and Coca-Cola Foundation.

Total Investment: USD $2,607,637.00

FEMSA Foundation’s Investment: USD $500,000.00

Duration: 2017 – 2021

General Objective

Increase access to potable water and sanitation services and strengthen the sustainability of these services with a particular emphasis on the promotion of behavioral changes through local customs and traditions.

In March we launched the second phase of Lazos de Agua (Water Links) We started with the construction of water access infrastructure in Guatemala, Mexico, rural areas of Nicaragua and Paraguay. In 2018, we will carry out the project in Colombia and urban areas of Nicaragua.

“Lazos de Agua (Water Links) introduces a new way of designing and implementing water and sanitation projects where behavioral issues play a key role“.

GERMÁN STURZENEGGER
Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist, Inter-American Development Bank

In order to achieve sustainable interventions, the inhabitants must take ownership of them. We will focus on catalyzing behavioral changes through the use of local customs and traditions so they can modify their habits, improve their relationship with water, promote hygiene practices and empower themselves to take charge of their development.

A Tool for Growth

Nourishing Experiences

We promote early childhood development through one playful and attractive tool that will improve communication between health professionals, parents and caregivers of children through the age of 0 to 5. This way, they will comprehend the importance of proper nutrition and development in their first years of life.

FACT SHEET

Location: Jandira and São Paulo, Brazil

Partners: Centro de Recuperación y Educación Nutricional (CREN)

Total Investment: USD $105,479.00

FEMSA Foundation’s Investment: USD $91,084.00

Duration: 2017 – 2019

General Objective

Promote child development through the development of a tool that allows better communication between parents and doctorrs in order to improve the comprehension of good nutrition and child devlopment messages to mothers and relatives of children from 0 to 5 years old.

We have an objective: to harness children’s potential. The right nutrition during the first years of life is a great opportunity to achieve it because during this phase the health and develop basis is set for life.

We seek that our parents and caregivers through the age of 0 to 5 improve their comprehension on nutrition during their first years of life. In this way, they’ll be able to transform meals into experiences that nourish them completely, not only physically but actually boosting their overall development. To do this, we created a playful and attractive tool to improve communication amongst them and health professionals that follow up on their children.

“The moments I like most with my son are breastfeeding and laughing.“

Mother of child

In 2017, we worked on a diagnosis to comprehend the underlying issue. We worked with focal groups with health professionals and surveyed families in Basic Health Units. During 2018, with the diagnosis in mind, we created the tool and its launch with personnel.
